It’s no secret that the most expensive smartphone models bring companies the most profit, while inexpensive devices are often sold with a minimal mark-up relative to cost. That is why manufacturers tend to produce expensive flagships, such as the recent Xiaomi 12S Ultra . After studying its constituent components (BoM or Bill of Material), Counterpoint Research researchers calculated the cost of the most ambitious camera phone of the year.
It turned out that the junior configuration of 8/256 GB costs Xiaomi $516, while it comes to the shelves for 5999 yuan (about $899). And this time, the calculation includes the cost of assembly, testing, certification for water resistance and even packaging. Curiously, a set of four cameras (three main + front camera) and heaps of auxiliary sensors take only 15% of the cost of a smartphone ($79), yielding only to the display ($89). But the most expensive motherboard with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and memory: a total of $186. In general, the cost of Xiaomi 12S Ultra falls short of the 256 GB iPhone 13 Pro ($570), not to mention the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the latter are also sold at almost twice the cost ($1099 and $1199).
