The EU has approved new rules that expand the ability to use Ukrainian driver’s licenses, the main service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports .
We are talking about the new Regulation, which establishes special (softened) rules regarding expired, lost or stolen driver’s licenses. It provides for the competent authorities of the EU countries the opportunity to check the validity of the Ukrainian driver’s license using the Diya portal and the online document verification service on the website of the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which also has an English version. It should be noted that the changes only apply to persons enjoying temporary or appropriate protection in the EU countries.
Now in the EU you can:
- use a Ukrainian driver’s license without the need to exchange it during the entire period of stay under protection;
- It is now possible to use old-style driver’s licenses issued in Cyrillic without a certified translation or an international driver’s license. But you still need to have a document to confirm your identity;
- use a Ukrainian driver’s license issued for the first time for 2 years even if it expires;
- get a temporary (for the period of being under protection) EU-type driver’s license without passing exams in case of loss or theft of a Ukrainian driver’s license.
The new rules were proposed by the European Commission on 21 June, adopted by Parliament last week and by the EU Council on 18 July. They enter into force five days after their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union .
