The Hollywood publication Variety analyzed the fees of American actors and came to interesting conclusions. It turns out that even well-known and popular actors can get relatively low money for original films, but when it comes to sequels or projects for streaming giants like Netflix or Apple, then actors can count on a very serious increase.
As an example, the publication mentions Tom Cruise, who will receive about $ 100 million for his latest action movie Top Gun: Maverick / Top Gun: Maverick. In fairness, it should be noted that this is not a fixed fee, but a fee plus a percentage of the theater fees (which have already exceeded $ 1.2 billion). For the next two action movies in the Mission: Impossible series, Tom Cruise will receive about $12-14 million in guaranteed fees and an unknown (but probably very high) percentage of the box office. Dwayne Johnson will receive $22.5 million for his lead role in the superhero film Black Adam and additional bonuses for producing and promoting the film on his social media.
Major film studios are willing to accept such conditions, because the presence in the film of an actor of the level of Tom Cruise practically guarantees box office success. Interestingly, in previous years, movie stars preferred to receive “all at once”, stipulating a fixed fee of $20 million. However, the reverse situation is also true – many stars are ready for a drastic reduction in fees if the film is directed by a recognized director. For example, for participation in the upcoming Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer / Oppenheimer, actors Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Emily Blunt will receive only $ 4 million, although they are used to fees of at least $ 10 million.
Another important aspect of fee growth is competition among streaming services. So, Apple will pay $ 30 million to Leonardo DiCaprio for shooting in the film Killers of the Flower Moon / “Killers of the Flower Moon”, the same amount to Brad Pitt for participating in an unnamed drama about the Formula One championship and as much as $ 35 million to Will Smith for the historical thriller about runaway slave Emancipation / “Liberation”. Netflix has pledged $20 million to Chris Hemsworth and $10 million to Millie Bobby Brown to star in the sequels to Extraction/Tyler Rake: The Rescue and Enola Holmes/Enola Holmes, respectively.
The situation with the sequels of films that showed excellent box office results is very interesting. After the first Aquaman grossed over $1 billion, Jason Momoa doubled his paycheck for the sequel (he got $7.5 million in the first film and $15 million in the second). Even more revealing is the situation with the sequel Joker / “Joker” – for his role in the first picture, Joaquin Phoenix received $ 4.5 million, but for the continuation he will already be paid $ 20 million – that is, 4.5 times more (thanks to the fees of $ 1.07 billion) .
