The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) considered another case against Google as part of the verification of its compliance with the norms of the antimonopoly legislation of the Russian Federation. As a result, the regulator decided to fine the American company in the amount of more than 2 billion rubles, which must be paid within the next two months. The reason for this decision by the FAS was Google’s policy within the framework of YouTube video hosting, where “the rules related to the formation, suspension and blocking of accounts and the circulation of user content are opaque, biased and unpredictable”, which, according to the authorities, leads to infringement of rights and limits competition in related markets.
Note that the Russian subsidiary of Google is now in bankruptcy proceedings, which is connected, among other things, with the inability to pay fines due to restrictions imposed on its Russian accounts. The main claim of the regulators, which is also read in today’s decision, is the blocking of a number of Russian media on the YouTube video hosting. In political circles, they even started talking about blocking the service in Russia, but at this stage there are no sufficient grounds for such drastic measures. There are no comments from Google regarding the new penalty yet.
