As a recent report showed, the global smartphone market continued to decline in the second quarter of 2022. But who would have thought that the most tragic situation has unfolded in China: the market sank 14.2% year on year, reaching the level of 10 years ago when the iPhone 5 first hit the market. The situation is so bad that even at the worst moment of the covid 2020 sales figures were higher. Shipments amounted to about 60 million smartphones, which is less than half of the historical peak of 2016.
Honor occupied 18.3% of the Chinese market, losing the palm to Vivo (19.8%), which was only fourth in the quarter. The third line went to OPPO (17.9% of the market), but Apple (15.5%) and Xiaomi (14.9%) breathe down its back. Huawei continued its decline (6.9%), while Realme stopped growing. At the same time, compared with the balance of power in the same period of 2021, the leading Chinese brands sank by 23-45%, and only Honor showed more than a twofold increase in market share. Counterpoint Research researchers explain the negative dynamics in the Chinese market by rising inflation, the situation in Ukraine and new quarantines in China itself. However, one should not lose sight of the fact that the Chinese themselves, if possible, prefer to buy an iPhone , rather than the decisions of domestic companies.
