Canalys and Omdia have published their smartphone market reports for the second quarter of 2022 (April-June). The conclusions of the companies are the same: sales are falling rapidly, and at the forefront of this fall are Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo, which lost about 20% compared to the same period last year. Their fall is due to difficulties in the Chinese market, where the demand for smartphones as a whole is greatly reduced. Samsung and Apple, not so heavily tied to the Chinese market, were even able to increase sales.

At the same time, Omdia’s market vision is generally more optimistic than Canalys data. However, they mostly differed in their assessment of what happens to companies outside the top 5. Canalys believes their sales are down as well, down 10% overall, while Omdia says it’s up 4.5%. True, the basis of this growth is Honor, which is rapidly regaining its position in the market.
Note that according to Omdia, BBK remains the leader in the smartphone market: OPPO, Vivo and Realme combined sold 63.9 million smartphones, which is 1.7 million more than Samsung (and there is OnePlus, which Omdia considers a separate company). Canalys does not release its estimate for Realme’s sales, but if it is close to Omdia’s, then BBK maintains its lead despite a sharp decline in sales.
