After a lot of announcements, Saw 10 has been officially confirmed. After the financially successful Saw revival in 2017, the franchise continued with last year’s spin-off Spiral: From the Book of Saw, starring Chris Rock, based on the star’s story idea. The film, to mixed reviews from critics and audiences, was a modest box office success, grossing over $40 million on a $20 million budget.
Even before the modest success of Spiral, Saw 10 was confirmed in development at Twisted Pictures. At the time, franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman called the information premature and made no mention of whether he would continue the Rock film’s story or the main plot.
Josh Stolberg, who wrote the screenplay for both Saw and Spiral, shared behind-the-scenes details of the sequel’s development over the past year. Intrigued by the statement that this is his favorite film in the franchise. Roughly five months after Stolberg’s announcement, viewers finally learned something new about Saw 10.
The Wrap has reported that Lionsgate is officially promoting Saw 10 with producers Twisted Pictures. Kevin Grothert, who directed the sixth and seventh installments of the franchise, is back to direct a new sequel from a script by series veteran Josh Stolberg.
Producers Mark Burg and Oren Coles revealed that Saw 10 will include wishes from horror movie fans and lovers. This statement is in line with Stolberg’s words that Tobin Bell’s “Saw” will return to the fold of the franchise . If so, this further confuses the series’ timeline.
The return of Kevin Grothert to direct Saw 10 is good news for fans and critics alike – his first film, Saw 6, is still the second most popular movie behind James Wan’s original film.
That being said, the director was also behind the weakest film in the series, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter. Still, critics hope that Stolberg’s script, combined with Greutert’s direction, will produce a good result. The release of the film is timed to coincide with Halloween 2023 (release is scheduled for October 27).
