Google Play will ban VPN apps that block ads. The company’s policy for developers, announced in July 2022, effective November 1, does not allow the creation of a secure device-level tunnel to a remote server for purposes other than providing a virtual private network.
According to Google, VPN applications should not collect personal or sensitive data without explicit disclosure of information and without the consent of the user. In addition, they must not redirect or manipulate traffic for purposes that affect the monetization of other services.
The situation also worries conscientious VPN developers. For example, the Swedish service Blokada believes that the new rule will interfere with the operation of the previous version of its program (all policy changes are taken into account in the new one). The well-known search engine DuckDuckGo commented on the news: “We do not believe that the policy will affect us, but our team continues to study it.”
Android isn’t the only OS that limits VPNs. Apple policy requires that VPN applications use the NEVPNManager API and that developers are not individuals but companies.
Microsoft Edge browser will get a built-in VPN powered by Cloudflare
