Speaking at the Code Conference last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company needs to become 20% more efficient. This statement was perceived in the industry as an announcement of a reduction in the number of personnel. Now these assumptions have begun to be confirmed. Google has been reported to be cutting back on projects in its research arm, known as Area 120.
The company informed employees of a “downsizing”, which would cut the size of the incubator by half. Half of the teams learned that their projects were being cancelled. Previously, there were 14 projects in Area 120, but now there are 7. Employees whose projects will not continue were told that they would need to find a new job at Google by the end of January 2023, or they would be fired.
According to Area 120 head Elias Roman, the division aims to focus only on AI-focused projects. Previously, the startup incubator was developing innovations in all areas of Google.
“Zone 120 is an internal incubator for experimental new products. The group regularly starts and stops projects in an effort to exploit the most promising opportunities,” a Google spokesperson said. “Recently, we reported that Area 120 will shift its focus to projects based on Google’s deep investment in artificial intelligence that can solve important user problems. As a result, Area 120 is winding down several projects to make room for new work. Affected team members will receive special support as they explore new projects and opportunities at Google.”
Projects within Area 120 include the Stack Android app for scanning and processing documents, the free Grasshopper app for learning the basics of JavaScript programming through mini-games, the free Game Builder game , which is designed to “learn” how to develop computer games, and etc.
