The author of the PBKreviews channel, specializing in disassembling gadgets and evaluating their maintainability, has published a video with the opening of the top iPhone 14 Pro Max . Contrary to tradition, disassembling a smartphone does not begin with removing the SIM tray – it simply does not exist in American models. It’s nice to see that the procedure for replacing the screen, as the most frequently injured element, is carried out quickly and easily: the disassembly process literally begins with its removal. The same applies to the 3223 mAh L-shaped battery, which is also available at an early stage of disassembly.
By the way, despite the departure from the “bangs”, Apple has not abandoned the proximity sensor (which, for example, has disappeared from many Xiaomi smartphones, for which the company is often subjected to justified criticism about the incorrect operation of the “virtual” sensor). The proximity sensor itself in the iPhone 14 Pro Max is located just below the “island”, and the light sensor is adjacent to it.
The dimensions of the main 48-megapixel camera look impressive against the background of the width and telephoto, and the front camera is merged into a single module with the Face ID system. The situation is similar with the Lightning port, combined into a single module with antennas, microphones and cables. By the way, the author mentions OIS in the front camera, although Apple itself does not declare optical stabilization. The video (timecode 3:43) shows that the module is clearly not solidly fixed on the substrate, and therefore we will leave this moment in question for now. Also, a fragment of the motherboard looks interesting, where the SIM tray is located in models for markets outside the United States: something can be seen there that looks like a banal plastic plug (we hope that this is not so).
The final maintainability of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is rated 6.5 out of 10, which is better than the two previous generations (iPhone 12 and 13). The author withdrew points for the inaccessibility of many modules of the device, and the design of the device itself is complex, multi-layered and consists of a huge number of individual components and several dozen screws.
