AMD has officially unveiled new cost-effective processors designed for use in budget laptops.
AMD Mendocino chips are part of the 7020 series. They are based on the Zen2 processor architecture and are manufactured using the 6nm process technology. The TDP indicator for them is 8-15 watts. Unlike Intel, which abandoned the Pentium and Celeron brands , AMD will continue to use the Athlon brand for low-cost solutions in the future.
The most productive among the new processors – Ryzen 5 7520U – contains 4 processing cores, supports 8 instruction streams and operates at a frequency of up to 4.3 GHz (with a base frequency of 2.8 GHz). The Ryzen 3 7320U version features reduced operating frequencies: a base frequency of 2.4 GHz and an increased frequency of 4.1 GHz. The most affordable 2-core processor Athlon Gold 7220U supports 4 instruction streams, and its frequencies are set at 2.4/3.7 GHz. This model also contains 5 MB of cache memory versus 6 MB for Ryzen chips. In all cases, the integrated graphics core Radeon 610M based on the RDNA2 architecture is used.
According to AMD, the 7020 series supports Microsoft Pluton and Modern Platform Technology solutions such as wake-upon-voice and fast charging. Mendocino processors will be released in the fourth quarter of this year with the Acer Aspire 3, Lenovo IdeaPad 1 and an unnamed HP 17-inch laptop.
