Starting next month, features for Windows 11 will begin to appear with a new frequency – Microsoft will not tie them to the annual update, improvements will begin to appear as they become available.
The company says the new features will be delivered through the Microsoft Store as well as monthly security updates – meaning most users will get them automatically. For commercial users, there is an option to control updates using Universal Group Policy, which can be configured to enable or disable new features that will be added to version 22H2 over the next year.
The first features will appear in October and will include the following improvements:
Microsoft will add tabs to the File Explorer app and update the left navigation bar, which reorganizes the folder layout for a better experience.
The Photos app will get new image management capabilities, a new gallery design, and easier viewing, searching, and backing up photos to OneDrive.
- Suggested actions
A new user interface will appear every time you copy a phone number or date, offering quick actions to process the data, such as adding the number to your contact list or creating an Outlook event around the date you copied.
- Taskbar Overflow (taskbar overflow)
The interface of the taskbar will be updated – there will be a separate opportunity to move icons from the panel if it is full. Useful for computers with small screens or users with taskbars that are too large.
An update to be able to share files across more devices using file sharing.
- Microsoft Store improvements
Microsoft Store updates are expected with screenshots in search results, the ability to restore apps with one click, and Android apps appearing in search results.
Microsoft will not officially announce the appearance of the functions, which, of course, will complicate their identification a little. The company intends to release them up to four times a year – experts suggest that the next Moment (internal name) mini-update will happen as early as February-March 2023.
Earlier it became known that Microsoft is moving to the traditional three-year development cycle of major versions of the Windows client. This means that Windows 11 will receive “version 23H2” as early as next year.
The company is now in the early stages of planning and developing the next major version of the Windows client, due in 2024. It is currently unknown if this release will be an update to Windows 11 or if there will be a Windows product with a new number.
