On the morning of September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin nevertheless “spoke” – he announced “partial mobilization” from September 21 and the activation of the military industry, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced his intention to call on 300 thousand reservists (an interesting fact – earlier AvtoVAZ announced plans to issue at least 300 thousand vehicles in 2023) and at the same time emphasized that Russia lost “less than 6,000 soldiers in Ukraine” (in fact, as the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarifies , the loss of personnel of the Russian Federation is about 55,110 people (approximately +300 for previous day)).
It would seem that all the jokes and memes about the enemy that were prepared for Putin’s appeal have already been joked, but today’s panic of the Russians inspired the Ukrainians even more and a new wave covered the social networks. We held a small selection with the first reactions (there will be no video with protests – they are taking place in Iran).
First reactions
The Google Trends service is the best way to convey the panic that currently dominates Russia. Here are some striking examples of changing trends in the search queries of Russians on Google:
Russian stock indices collapsed sharply after the news of the mobilization – the index of the Moscow Exchange at the opening of trading on September 21 fell by 9.61%, dropping to 2002.73 – at such low levels the index is traded for the first time since February 24. At the same time, the RTS dollar index fell 11.81% to 1,017.86 points, a new low since August 18.
Reports are circulating online that Russians have bought up tickets for all the next direct flights to Istanbul, Yerevan and Tbilisi, and the authorities have responded by imposing restrictions – the Russian railway (RZD) and air carrier (Aeroflot) seem to no longer sell tickets to men over the age of 18 up to 65 years of age without special permission to move around the country or travel abroad from the military registration and enlistment office.
Meanwhile, Oleksiy “i sho” Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine:
Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, wrote in turn that “life has a wonderful sense of humor”:
The so-called Russian “liberals” and “oppositionists” complain that Russians are not given a visa – since September 19, the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) and Poland have stopped letting Russian tourists with Schengen visas. A week earlier, the Council of the European Union had completely suspended the visa facilitation agreement with Russia.
Latvia was among the first to confirm that it would not issue humanitarian or other types of visas to Russian citizens wishing to avoid partial mobilization.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians continue to actively joke on social networks (they say that the test alerts of the State Emergency Service are worse than Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons) and create new thematic memes about spring in Makeevka Russians and their “utilization”.
