Today, official sales of the iPhone 14 start in Ukraine – prices start at ₴ 41,499, and, according to the tradition of Picodi, the annual derisive “iPhone Index” (the cost of a smartphone expressed in working days) was prepared exactly for this event – in a new study, the authors compared the cost of the iPhone 14 Pro 128 GB with an average salary in 47 countries and calculated how much the citizens of these countries need to work to afford a new Apple phone.
Briefly about the index and methodology for its calculation
The iPhone Index is an annual ranking of the ratio of the cost of the iPhone to the average salary, which has been compiled by Picodi analysts since 2018. In their calculations, they use open statistical data on the size of the average wage and start from the fact that there are 21 working days on average in a month. The Picodi method doesn’t take into account differentiation and all that. But, as has been repeatedly noted, it should be understood here that such studies are carried out simply for fun, and they are primarily designed to cheer up.
So, actually, how much?
If last year the base iPhone 13 Pro with 128 GB at the very beginning cost 37,499 ₴ , then the iPhone 14 Pro with the same amount of memory is offered for 52,499 ₴ . Yes, war, inflation and the devaluation of the hryvnia did their job, because in the US the new Apple smartphones did not rise in price by a cent compared to the iPhone 13 line. » The price is valid only for four states where the sales tax is 0%.
According to the latest data from the State Statistics Service , the average monthly salary in Ukraine is ₴13,957 (₴11,236 in hand). It turns out that in order to raise money for the iPhone 14 Pro, the average Ukrainian must work 98.1 days (provided that he saves all the money he earns). Compared to last year’s index , the result of Ukraine, the number of days increased by 28.2 days.
This is how the iPhone Index looked in Ukraine for 5 years.
Switzerland remains the undisputed leader of the ranking – the Swiss can earn on the iPhone 14 Pro in 4.6 days (last year it was 4.4 days). Australia, UAE and Luxembourg follow with 6.1, 6.5 and 7.1 days respectively.
Among the countries included in the rating, Tajikistan showed the worst result, where the iPhone corresponds to 179.5 workdays. The second and third places from the bottom are occupied by Turkey and Kyrgyzstan with the results of 146.7 and 136.3 respectively.
