Overclocker Bill Alverson (Sampson) set two records for the highest scores in Cinebench R23 and R20 for 16-core processors by overclocking an AMD-provided Ryzen 9 7950X chip to 6.5 GHz under liquid nitrogen. Without extreme cooling, the processor runs at up to 5.7 GHz, starting at a base 4.5 GHz at a suggested retail price of $700.
Its R23 result of 48,235 points is about 8,000 points higher than the now second-place i9-12900KS overclocked to 7 GHz. The record is about 11,000 points or 30% higher than the previously released factory clocked 7950X scores, and almost 20,000 points higher than the current 5950X scores.
The overclocked 7950X managed to beat other 16-core processors and enter the territory of 32-core giants like the Threadripper 3970X. It also outperforms the 28-core Intel Xeon W-3175X released a couple of years ago.
According to the screenshot, the overclocking process had a x64.5 multiplier applied to the default bus frequency (100MHz), resulting in 6450MHz on all cores. A voltage of 1.4 V was required to achieve it. The power consumption in the process reached 271 W, which is 101 W more than the factory TDP.
The test system was an Asus ROG Crosshair X670E Gene motherboard paired with two sticks of 16GB DDR5 memory clocked at 3600MHz. Integrated graphics used – AMD Raphael based on RDNA2 with a clock frequency of 600 MHz. The Asrock X670E Taichi motherboard was used for the R20 record.
Hardware monitoring tools show the parameters of the second overclocking attempt. Benchmate recorded 6513.28MHz, CPU-Z said 6538.38MHz, and HWiNFO shows that a 100.1MHz bus speed and x64.63 multiplier resulted in an average clock speed of 6470.2MHz. That was enough to score 18,605 points and set the 16-core CPU record in the R20. For comparison, the highest scores for the 5950X and i9-12900K (LN2) are 15,664 points when clocked up to 6GHz and 15,625 points when overclocked to 6873MHz.
The Intel Core i9-13900K’s recent single-core PassMark score of 4883 makes it a leader in this score. Engineering samples of the i9-13900K are clocked at 5.5 GHz, boosted up to 5.8 GHz for two loaded cores. Nothing is known about the test conditions.
