Substack has unveiled Substack Reader, a desktop RSS client that can compete with Google Reader, which was shut down 10 years ago. The new desktop client remembers Google client users – familiar keyboard shortcuts are supported.
Users can organize Substack subscriptions on a single web page that can be viewed from their laptop or PC. The app integrates with third-party RSS feeds so users can also view posts from other sources. Substack prioritizes the news that generates the most subscriptions in a single mailbox. Readers can also like and save posts from the feed.
The content syncs with the Substack iOS mobile app released earlier this year – users can view web reader feeds from their smartphone. We are also working on a mobile app for Android.
“We invest in creating distraction-free spaces so you can connect with the creators, readers, podcasters and video makers you love. There are no pop-ups, auto-playing videos or annoying sounds in the new Reader. The user is in control.”
The new RSS reader isn’t as feature rich as competitors like Feedly, which offer advanced features like Evernote integration.
Of the interesting things, it has the ability to read recommendations from the authors of preferred subscriptions.
