This year, the smartphone market is going through hard times. Canalys researchers who track its dynamics have published a fresh report on the results of the third quarter of 2022. The rate of decline is the same as a quarter earlier: the market dipped by 9% compared to the same period a year earlier. This is the worst quarterly result since Q3 2014 – even in the pandemic 2020, the situation was better.
Considering the top five manufacturers-leaders, Apple feels the best, showing significant growth and occupying 18% of the market (after 15% a year earlier). This is already perilously close to the leader Samsung, which accounts for 22% of smartphones sold on the planet. Chinese brands are more likely to stagnate: the share of Xiaomi remained unchanged (14%), while OPPO and Vivo lost 1% and 2% respectively, now occupying shares of 10% and 9%, respectively. At the same time, no particular positive is expected from the final quarter of the year.
