In the press release of the new iOS 16, Apple mentioned some kind of “clean energy charging” (Clean Energy Charging), which puzzled with an extremely vague description of the principle of operation and benefits. And now, with the launch of iOS 16.1 a month and a half later, Apple decided to lay out all the intricacies of the mysterious technology. When Clean Energy Charging is turned on and you plug your iPhone into a wall outlet, your iPhone receives a forecast of carbon emissions from the local power grid and schedules charging to occur during times of cleaner energy production. The key point in all this is that the forecast is determined by GPS, which means that Apple pleased itself with another reason to once again know your location, although it immediately denies this fact.
A ticklish moment is that this feature only works in the United States, but is already enabled by default on all iPhones that have switched to iOS 16.1. Of course, you can turn it off by going to Settings -> Battery -> Battery health and charging and turning off the “Charging with clean energy” switch. Additionally, Apple explains that eco-charging will only work where you spend the most time and regularly charge your iPhone, which means that when you travel to new places and travel, the device will charge as quickly as possible. In addition, experts have already criticized the environmental friendliness of this kind of charging, which can be read about here .
