Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

AMD produces quite good video adapters, but they turn out to be unnecessary for most. This is evidenced by the overwhelming number of RTX/GTX graphics cards among users. Why is NVIDIA an absolute monopoly? What’s wrong with “red” video cards? To understand the essence of the problem, you will have to delve into history and analyze the market.

Historical tour

2010 – the golden age of home computers. Back then, you could buy a good video card for $100-150 (Radeon HD 4770, HD 4850). The PC world was booming. Good competition among both manufacturers, excellent products for little money, crazy customer demand. AMD held 40%. NVIDIA still had an advantage, but a slight one. At that time, both manufacturers offered +- the same level of performance. Rivals competed technologically side by side. Buyers were really confused about which camp to join.Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

It is not surprising. The successful HD 4000 series flew off the shelves. Cheap, powerful and low-power video cards have become hits. What is the Radeon HD 4770 alone worth with an MSRP of $99. It was not a budget model at all, but a gaming video card (class above average). The company later released the HD 5000, which also sold quite well. The HD 6000 series “brought to its knees” many power supplies of that time. The hot and productive HD 6990 was still a decent choice.

But it wasn’t like that for long. In a few years, the company began to surrender positions. It was possible to see an increase in the gap in terms of technology. Everything was going well until the release of the Radeon RX 4xx series. Radeon RX 5xx began to bury the company in the grave. The hit Radeon RX 580 was sold for relatively little money. But technologically, it was one of the company’s worst products ever. This model was supposed to compete with the NVIDIA GTX 1070, and in real life it became only an “analogue” of the GTX 1060. Gamers increasingly bought “green” video cards. Their choice is quite understandable. It was not enough to offer cheap video cards. Gamers wanted maximum performance, and Radeon Vega 56/64 failed.

Has nothing changed? Why are people refusing to buy Radeon graphics cards in 2022? It’s all about cost, or rather the price-performance ratio.

A new era of AMD Radeon

During the period of active “home” mining, most graphics cards with a large amount of memory never worked in gaming PCs. Radeon RX 5xxx series among simple video game enthusiasts almost no one has seen. They were bought by farm owners for cryptocurrency mining.

Radeon RX 5500XT, 5600XT, 5700XT were really good against the background of NVIDIA at the time. After the not-so-successful RX 5xx, they would be a great replacement for the old line. But it was not destined. Radeon RX 6xxx were also used by “miners”, and cheap models appeared too late.

The RX 6400 is a video card that consumes as much energy as the office “plugs” of the NVIDIA GT and uses the speed of the GTX 1050 Ti. The narrow 64-bit bus and dependence on PCI-E 4.0 prevented this adapter from becoming popular. Most computer owners use PCI-E 3.0. In this case, the video card loses the lion’s share of performance. This is the main reason why the typical gamer did not want to buy it. People chose NVIDIA GTX 1650, 1050Ti, GTX 1630 instead.

RX 6500 XT also pleases with good performance and minimal heat generation. The performance at 1 W is very good. A compact, unpretentious video chip on a modern architecture at a recommended price during the mining boom. But the problem is the same as in RX6400. It was a little more expensive to get a more powerful GTX 1660. And most importantly, without PCI-E version restrictions.

Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

The RX 6600 (XT) sold poorly due to NVIDIA’s RTX 2060/3050/3060 availability. Gamers wanted chips that AMD did not have. DLSS is certainly an excellent technology, far superior to the software “analogue” of FSR. It was more rational to buy NVIDIA RTX for the same price. The price tag did not decrease, so people bypassed this model.

By the end of 2022, the Radeon RX 6600 has become much cheaper. Currently, they are a better buy than similar models from NVIDIA. But more on that below.

RX 6700/6800 (XT) have powerful competitors from NVIDIA. Radeon’s “pure” performance is good, but with ray tracing and DLSS, NVIDIA takes the lead. Prices have been inflated for a long time. No wonder gamers avoided them.

The RX 6900 XT couldn’t compete with NVIDIA’s flagships for obvious reasons. Professionals who work with 3D graphics will not look in the direction of Radeon. It was also uninteresting to gamers due to its cost.

The stores kept high price tags, so only miners bought them.

Are Radeons Really That Bad?

Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

No, they are not bad, but they were not popular because of the price policy of the stores. AMD graphics card prices remained quite high during the 2020-2022 mining period. They have been uncompetitive for gamers for a long time.

Reasons why users chose NVIDIA over Radeon:

  • High-quality support for Raytracing technology;
  • Hardware support for DLSS upscale;
  • Best performance in professional applications;

But now the situation has changed somewhat. Stores drop prices, and this becomes a key factor in the choice of gamers. The RX 570/580 model became a hit of its time thanks to the price. For its price, it offered maximum productivity. Modern AMD video cards are quite good video adapters, albeit without certain “chips”. Now it is better to choose “middle-class” and top models.

Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

The best Radeon deals until the end of 2022:

RX 6600 UAH 13,000

RX 6650 XT UAH 15,000

RX 6700 XT UAH 18,000

RX 6800 XT UAH 25,000

RX 6900 XT UAH 29,000

Conclusions

Why no one buys Radeon video cards?

AMD Radeon are not very popular, but still decent video cards for fans of computer video games. The RX6600 (XT) shows good performance for its price, while the RX6700 (XT) and 6800 (XT) have dropped more than their NVIDIA counterparts. Low demand for Radeon products has forced sellers to drop prices like never before. By the end of 2022, there was an opportunity to upgrade with the help of reds.

Most importantly, they have become an attractive choice for their cost relative to the competition. Representatives of the middle and upper class dropped the most in price. Under such conditions, they are a rational choice. Even NVIDIA fans may wonder. On the eve of the release of the RX 7xxx, it is a good time to buy the RX 6xxx. Especially if the stores offer good discounts.
