Dismantling of the monument to Catherine II in Odessa
In recent months, the public debate on the appropriateness of placing a monument to Empress Catherine II in the center of Odessa has intensified. In October, an electronic survey was conducted on the fate of the monument. Among the proposed options, Odessans most supported the idea of dismantling the monument and leaving the sculptural composition in place, but supplementing it with information about the activities of the empress.
The city hall informed that the final decision on the fate of the monument “Founders of Odesa” will be made by the city council.
Prior to this, unknown persons repeatedly poured paint over the mentioned monument. Actions were also held near the pedestal demanding its demolition. On November 6, a fence was erected around the monument.
History of the monument “Founders of Odessa”
In 2007, Catherine Square was restored in Odessa. During the restoration, a monument to the “Founders of Odesa” was erected on the square, which is a copy of the monument dismantled by the Bolsheviks in 1925.
This is a composition whose central figure is the Russian empress Catherine II. She is surrounded by satellites (small statues) – Hryhoriy Potemkin, Platon Zubov, Yosyp Deribas and Franz de Volant.
