Stable Diffusion 2.0 makes it difficult to create porn and copy the paintings of famous artists - users did not like this update

An update to Stable Diffusion, the text-to-image AI generator, has made it harder to emulate certain artists’ styles or create nude images, but offers other functional improvements.

Stability AI, the company that funds and distributes the AI generator software, has just announced Stable Diffusion 2. The new version updates key components of the model and improves certain features, such as scaling (the ability to increase the resolution of images) and drawing (context-aware editing). . But the changes also make it more difficult for Stable Diffusion to create certain types of images (including erotic and pornographic material, photorealistic images of celebrities, and images that imitate the work of certain artists).

This sparked a flurry of criticism on social media: “They messed up the model,” commented a user on the Stable Diffusion subreddit. “Unpleasant surprise,” wrote another on the official Discord server.

Users are reporting that asking Stable Diffusion 2 to generate an image in the style of digital artist Greg Rutkowski no longer produces artwork that closely resembles the artist’s own style. Compare, for example, these images:

“What did you do to Greg?” commented one Discord user.

The changes to Stable Diffusion are notable as the software is hugely influential and helps set the norm in the fast-changing AI generator scene. Unlike competing models such as OpenAI’s DALL-E, Stable Diffusion is open source, allowing the community to rapidly improve the tool and developers to integrate it into their products for free.

But this also means that Stable Diffusion is less restrictive in its use, which also raises criticism. In particular, many artists like Rutkowski are upset that Stable Diffusion and other image generators learned from their work without consent and can now reproduce their styles.

The question is, is such artificial intelligence copying legal? Experts say training artificial intelligence models on copyrighted data is likely legal, but some use cases could be challenged in court.

Users of Stable Diffusion speculated that changes to the model were made by Stability AI to mitigate potential legal issues. However, when The Verge asked Stability AI founder Emad Mostak if that was the case, he did not respond. Although he confirmed that Stability AI did not remove the artists’ paintings from the training data (as many users assumed). At the same time, the very ability of the model to copy artists has been reduced.

“There was no special filtering of artists,” Mostak said.

What is really removed from the Stable Diffusion training data is nude and pornographic images. AI image generators are already being used to create pornographic images – photorealistic and anime-style. However, these models can also be used to create images that resemble specific people (known as forced pornography) and images of child abuse.

Discussing the Stable Diffusion 2 changes on the software’s official Discord, Mostak notes that the latter use case is the reason for the filtering.

One user on the Stable Diffusion subreddit said the removal of NSFW contentStable Diffusion 2.0 makes it difficult to create porn and copy the paintings of famous artists - users did not like this updateStable Diffusion 2.0 makes it difficult to create porn and copy the paintings of famous artists - users did not like this updateThe abbreviation NSFW is used to refer to resource addresses or hyperlinks that contain nudity, pornography, or profanity. was “censorship” and “contrary to the spiritual philosophy of open source”:

“It’s up to the end user to decide whether or not to create NSFW content.”

Others, however, have noted that Stable Diffusion’s open source makes it easy to add bare-body training data to third-party releases, and that the new software does not affect previous versions:

“Don’t be put off by V 2.0’s lack of pictures/NSFW, you’ll soon be able to create your favorite celebrity nude.”

While the changes in Stable Diffusion 2 annoyed some users, many others praised its potential for deeper functionality, including the software’s new ability to create content that matches the depth of an existing image. Others said that the changes made it really difficult to quickly create high-quality images, but that this feature will likely be improved in future versions.

Mostak himself compared the new model to “a pizza base that allows anyone to add the ingredients (i.e., training data) of their choice.”

“A good model should be available to everyone, and if you want to add something – add it,” he wrote on Discord.

Mostak also said that future versions of Stable Diffusion will use training datasets that allow artists to confirm or cancel their participation.
