The Christmas tree and the popular Christmas market have reopened in Prague.
Thousands of people flocked to Prague’s Old Town Square over the weekend to light the main Christmas tree and reopen the Christmas market after a two-year shutdown due to COVID-19.
As Reuters writes, however, this year due to the energy crisis, there are fewer holiday lights than usual at the fair.
Popular with Czechs and foreign tourists alike for mulled wine, sausages, sweets and gifts, the fair has installed more energy-saving light bulbs to save money and send a message about the importance of energy efficiency.
“We decided to reduce the number of illuminated decorations on the streets and use modern LED lights, this also applies to the Christmas tree,” said Jan Čabr, a member of the Prague City Council.
The city decided not to turn on the garlands all day, like last year, but only from 4 p.m. to midnight.
“We don’t want to deprive people of the festive atmosphere of Christmas and New Year… but we understand that energy should not be wasted,” Chabr said.
Earlier, .Tourism wrote that the European cities with the best Christmas markets this year were named.
Celebrating Christmas in Prague
This year, the celebration of Christmas in Prague will begin on November 26 and end on January 6, 2023, which is a little longer than in “old Europe”.
The Christmas tree in Prague is decorated with traditional Czech blown glass balls. As for the food, in Prague, visitors can enjoy mulled wine, hot roasted chestnuts, gingerbread cookies or typical Czech food – Christmas cookies or Czech fried sausages.
