“We also have to say clearly: from today’s point of view, commitment to Nord Stream 2 in response to the annexation of Crimea was Germany’s contribution to the resolution of the war,” the ministry’s Twitter page said.
The role of Germany in the construction of Nord Stream-2 – what is known
The Russian project provided for the construction of two branches of the gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas. Its route was laid from the coast of the Russian Federation through the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing Ukraine. The construction of the gas pipeline was lobbied by then Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On February 22, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin had stopped the certification of the gas pipeline allegedly in response to the Kremlin’s decision to recognize the “LPR” and “DPR”. After the support of the project, the German Fund for the Protection of Climate and the Environment, which was created to circumvent US sanctions, refused.
On March 1, it became known that the operator of Nord Stream-2 went bankrupt due to anti-Russian sanctions. And on August 23, the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, called for the dismantling of the gas pipeline.
On September 2, Gazprom announced the complete suspension of gas supply through Nord Stream-1 for an indefinite period.
