The Odesa City Council decided to dismantle the monument to the “Founders of Odessa”, the central figure of which is the statue of Empress Catherine II, as well as the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov.
According to the correspondent of , the relevant decisions were adopted by the deputies today, November 30. According to the decision, the statue of the empress will be dismantled and handed over to the Odessa Art Museum.
In addition, the decision refers to four sculptures of the monument “Founders of Odessa”, which are museum objects of the state part of the Museum Fund of Ukraine and are registered by the municipal institution “Odesa Municipal Museum of Personal Collections named after O. V. Bleschunov”.
The four figures of the composition will also be dismantled and handed over to the municipal museum of personal collections named after Bleschunova.
In the future, it is planned that the sculptural composition, which is now located on Kateryninska Square, will be moved to a special thematic area arranged in the park named after Savytskyi, who was called him in the past. Lenin Komsomol. The mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, announced that a park of the Soviet and imperial past will be created there.
In addition, according to the decision, the monument to commander Oleksandr Suvorov, which was installed at the beginning of Dobrovolsky Avenue in the Suvorov district of Odessa, will also be dismantled and handed over to the Odessa Art Museum.

On November 24, the Executive Committee of the Odesa City Council supported the dismantling and relocation of the monument to the “Founders of Odesa”. The Executive Committee proposed that the central figure be transferred for temporary storage to the communal enterprise “Specialized Enterprise of Communal and Household Services”, which is responsible for cemeteries.
Prior to this, unknown persons repeatedly poured red paint over the specified monument. Actions were also held near the pedestal demanding its demolition.
