The reigning world champions are one step closer to defending their title.

On Sunday, December 4, as part of the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the French national team met the Polish national team.

The match between the teams took place at the “El-Tumama” stadium in Doha and ended with a confident victory of the reigning world champions with a score of 3:1.

The players of the French national team opened the score in the game in the 44th minute – from a pass by Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud scored. In the 74th minute, the French quickly switched from defense to attack, Ousmane Dembele made a pass to the penalty area, Mbappe processed the ball and calmly put it into the upper corner of the goal. Mbappe scored a double in stoppage time.

In the 90th + 9th minute, the Polish Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal of his team from the penalty spot.

According to the statistics portal Opta Sport, Kylian Mbappé became the first player in history who managed to score nine goals at the World Cup before reaching the age of 24.

Mbappe already has five goals at the World Cup in Qatar. In addition to the Polish national team, Mbappe also scored against Australia and scored a brace in the match against Denmark. Mbappe scored four more goals at the previous World Cup.

We should also note that the goal against the Polish national team became a landmark for Olivier Giroud. Thanks to this ball, the 36-year-old forward became the best scorer in the history of the French national team.

Giroud now has 52 goals scored in 117 matches for the country’s main team. From the top of the scorer’s list, the striker eliminated the previous record holder, Thierry Henry. The former forward of the French national team scored 51 goals in 123 matches.
