Children’s writer Volodymyr Vakulenko, who was killed by the Russians, was laid to rest in Kharkiv. They said goodbye to the deceased in the St. Dmitrov Church, and buried him in the Second City Cemetery.
According to the story of TSN, the occupiers stole him from his own house in the Izyum Oblast on March 24. After the city was liberated from the Russians, the writer’s body was found in a mass grave.
Vakulenko’s coffin is covered with the Ukrainian flag. He was a patriot, public figure, volunteer, participant of the Revolution of Dignity, beloved son and father of two children.
The last time Volodymyr was seen alive was on March 24, that day in the village of Kapitolivka in the Kharkiv region, the occupiers broke into the house and kidnapped him. When exactly the writer died, the investigation is still establishing, but the date of May 12 was marked on the cross. It was on this day that passers-by found his body with two bullet holes.
Today, the writer is being buried for the second time, already in a closed coffin, it was possible to identify him only by DNA. For the first time, Vakulenko was buried in the Izyum forest with a cross numbered 319.
“Jackals, how could this heart be shot through, please tell me. How is it possible? What did he do to you?” – the mother says and cries. Next to the writer’s mother, his father can barely hold on, he has withdrawn into himself. It was with his father that Volodymyr Vakulenko buried his handwritten diary in the garden under a cherry tree. The last entry the day before the abduction was: “Ukraine will win.” The diary is planned to be published in the near future.
Who is Volodymyr Vakulenko?
Volodymyr Vakulenko is the author of 13 books, including collections of children’s poems, which he dedicated to his son. 14-year-old Vitaly has an autistic disorder.
Vakulenko is a Ukrainian public figure, a participant in the Revolution of Dignity (wounded in Mariinsky Park on February 18, 2014 during a clash with “aunties”).
He was awarded a number of awards, including the “Silver Trident”. Volodymyr is also a laureate of the International “Coronation of Words” competition.
