At the beginning of December, the premiere of James Cameron’s long-awaited blockbuster “Avatar: The Path of Water” took place in London, and with it came the first reviews of journalists from specialized foreign publications.
The first Avatar became one of the most expensive ($237 million spent) and one of the highest-grossing films of all time ($2.92 billion). The film won three Oscars (including best cinematography, visual effects and production design), and it looks like 13 years later, Cameron wants to top that success.
The filmmaker was actually signed on to create an entire franchise: the filming of the third “Avatar” has already been completed and it should be released in 2024, two more films are planned for 2026 and 2028.
The premiere of the second film about the inhabitants of the planet Pandora has already taken place in London, and the audience immediately shared their first reviews.

“A slow start, a big build-up, an incredibly exciting second act with a lot of cool creatures make for an hour of incredibly beautiful, emotionally intense action – enough to send you home happy,” writes David Sims of The Atlantic.
it’s an Avatar movie: slow start, big build, incredibly involving second act with tons of world building and cool creatures that blisses you way out, then hour of screamingly good crystal clear emotionally trenchant action se

Yolanda Machado of Entertainment Weekly emphasized the visuals and called Cameron “a master of technology”, but noted that it “reminded her a bit of a few other films”.

Amon Warmann of Empire magazine said it was a “mixed piece of work” but better than the first film.
This product is considered pretty to look at though. And on the whole, I like #TheWayOfWater more than #Avatar 2009, if for the fact that it is in your face white saviorism than the original. pic.twitter.com/7cJxEow0Xp

Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell calls the film a “masterpiece” but has reservations:
The Path of Water is a visual masterpiece with extensive use of 3D and breathtaking views, but suffers from an unconvincing story and too many characters. However, James Cameron has brought it all together for an extraordinary finale full of emotion and thrilling action.”
Naturally, #AvatarTheWayOfWater is a visual masterpiece with rich use of 3D and breathtaking vistas. This is done with your store and a large number of characters to juggle, so James Cameron pulls it together for an extraordinary final action full of emotion and thrilling action. pic.twitter.com/opr6CRyOwk

Oleksandr Cardelo of MovieZine adds that the film did not impress him, although it caused strong emotions:
“Although the film does not exceed expectations, it has a touching family drama. The stakes are higher. New cute characters take the lead. Get ready to cry over CGI whales and fall in love with Sally’s kids. Three hours never seemed so short.”
While #AvatarTheWayOfWater doesn’t really exceed expectations, Cameron’s stunning sequel adds a touching family drama. The stakes are higher. New likeable characters are lead. Make shoot for CGI whales and fall in love with sully kids. 3 hours never felt so short.

Collider’s Perry Nemiroff called the film “pretty incredible” and praised the cast:
“I expected James Cameron to raise the bar with the effects, and they are truly impressive. One stunning shot after another. I really want to watch the movie a second time to pay attention to some details. On first viewing, it’s mostly a remarkably effective exploration of community and family dynamics. The returning cast is great, but the newcomers stand out, especially Britan Dalton as Loak.”

The events of the second “Avatar” take place more than ten years after the plot of the first part; the film will tell about Jake, Neytiri and their children during the next battle for Pandora. “Avatar: The Path of Water” will be released in Ukrainian cinemas on December 15.
Earlier in an interview, James Cameron called the film “extremely expensive” and “the worst business case in the history of cinema.” He also said that it can be considered profitable only if it becomes “at least the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history.” This means that Avatar 2 should collect at least $2 billion.
James Cameron says Avatar 2 needs to raise at least $2 billion to cover costs.
