The German language society annually chooses a word of the year. This time, the word Zeitenwende won the nomination – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz used this word to describe the Ukrainian-Russian war.

Zeitenwende translates as “turning point”.

“This word, which is not new and means the beginning of the Christian era, but in a more general sense also any transition to a new era, was actively used in the second meaning by Chancellor Scholz. The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 became “a turning point in of the history of our continent.” In the same context, Federal President Steinmeier spoke of an “epochal turning point,” Union members explained.
