Google Docs will receive a new feature that will simplify the display of code in an understandable form. The company announced that it is adding blocks of code to its “smart canvas” system that will automatically add the correct spacing and coloring for different programming languages, such as Python, C or Javascript.
Previously, in order for the code to look beautiful in Google Docs, workarounds or the use of not the most convenient plugins were required. While it wasn’t the end of the light, displaying code properly is important for documentation, and highlighting different parts of the code with color makes it much easier to read if it’s more than a few lines long.
The function is enabled by Insert > Building Blocks > Code Block. Then you need to select the appropriate language. you can also type “@project assets” into your document to call up a menu, similar to how the emoticon selection is called.

The feature will take some time to roll out — Google’s blog post says some people may not have it until January 18, depending on settings and region, and it’ll only be available to people with certain subscription levels. According to the company’s press release, if you’re using a personal Google Account, a legacy G Suite account, or the various Essential and Starter Workspace tiers, you won’t be able to access it. This is a little inconvenient for amateur programmers, but good for large companies.
