Russian security forces are detaining up to 100 Ukrainians in the pre-trial detention center of the temporarily occupied Simferopol. The prisoners were detained by the Russian military or special services.

According to the Russian “Agentstva. Novovinty”, there are two categories of Ukrainians in pretrial detention centers – those who tried to escape from the war to Russia, but were detained due to suspicions of helping the Armed Forces of Ukraine or dobrobats, and those who were forcibly removed from the temporarily occupied territories.

Lawyer Emil Kurbedinov said that after a few weeks or months, the occupiers released approximately seven to eight people from the pre-trial detention center. At the same time, he said that the Russians detained a Ukrainian woman who came to Crimea with her family.

The FSB of the Russian Federation explained only one detention. We are talking about Iryna Horobtsova, a resident of Kherson. She was detained allegedly because of “countering a special operation”, but there were no further details. The woman did not choose a preventive measure, and the Ministry of Defense did not include her in the list of persons involved in “countering a special operation”.

In addition, Ukraine considers the three detainees to be prisoners of war and plans to exchange them, including Pavlo Zaporozhets. The man is accused of trying to set up a roadblock on the path of a military patrol on May 9, which was considered an attempted terrorist attack.

Yaroslav Zhuk, a resident of Melitopol, is also on the list. The man is accused of international terrorism. In addition, the former captain of the Ukrainian Navy ship “Slavutich” Oleksiy Kiselyov is among the political prisoners. He is accused of participating in an illegal armed formation.

Lawyer Oleksiy Ladin reported that all three were tortured by the Russians with electric shock.

Prisoners of war in Russia – what is known

The exact number of Ukrainians held captive in Russia is currently unknown. Among the detainees are not only military personnel, but also civilians, including women.

Sometimes the Ukrainian and Russian sides exchange prisoners. So, on December 14, 64 soldiers of the Armed Forces returned home. Fighters fought in the Donetsk and Luhansk directions, in particular, they took part in the defense of Bakhmut.

It is worth noting that Russia does not comply with the Geneva Conventions and subjects captured Ukrainians to brutal torture, denies them proper medical care, and in order to hide the traces of their crimes, even kills prisoners, as happened in the colony in Olenivka.

Difficulties are caused by the fact that the Russian side does not allow even representatives of the International Red Cross to visit the Ukrainians. Only on December 8 did it become known that the ICRC had gained access to Ukrainians captured by the Russians.
