The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the aggressor country made claims to Moldova in connection with the revocation of broadcasting licenses of Russian TV channels that spread propaganda about the war in Ukraine.

As stated in the Russian department, such a step of the Moldovan authorities is considered as “oppression of the Russian speakers”.

“In light of the unprecedented consequences of its (the decision to revoke the license – ) implementation for the Russian-speaking part of the country’s population, we qualify it as a cynical restriction of the rights of national minorities,” the Russian agency said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation claims that this ban is not a way to limit the possibility of spreading Russian propaganda, but an alleged “act of political censorship, as an insult to the principle of media pluralism and gross contempt for the right to freedom of access to information.” Moreover, they demand a reaction from international organizations and “measures to correct this unacceptable situation.”

Ban on Russian TV channels in Moldova

On Friday, December 16, the National Commission for Emergency Situations of Moldova decided to revoke the broadcasting license of six TV channels. These are TV6, Orhei TV, Primul in Moldova, Accent TV, NTV Moldova and RTR Moldova (Moldovan versions of Russian TV channels).

The Commission stated that the decision was made on the basis of the reports of the Television and Radio Council on violations of the Television and Radio Code, which referred to the dissemination of incorrect information by these media during the coverage of events in the country and the war in Ukraine.

The decision to revoke the license will apply during the state of emergency in Moldova. The state of emergency in the country was introduced in connection with the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine and was repeatedly prolonged. It is still valid.
