James Cameron is one of the most commercially successful directors in history. Even before Avatar became a box office smash, he directed films like The Terminator and Titanic. The 2009 film Avatar turned into a five-episode franchise, with the second installment, Avatar: The Last Airbender, currently dominating the box office thirteen years later. As it turned out, there is another franchise that Cameron is not against restarting: “Terminator”. Recently on the Smartless podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, the director revealed that a reboot is indeed being discussed.
The thirteen-year gap between the two “Avatars” is explained by Cameron’s penchant for the most advanced technology and improvement of the story. Discussing his films and coverage of artificial intelligence in the film industry, Cameron confirmed talk of a reboot:
“If I were to make another Terminator movie and maybe try to reboot the franchise (which is being discussed but not yet decided), I would make it much more about AI than crazy robots gone mad.”
Although Cameron has not directed major installments of the franchise since Terminator: Judgment Day, he has been associated with sequels such as Terminator: Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate. Although he recently regretted helping to make the last Terminator for your grandfather.

The first “Terminator” was released in 1984, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. The film led the box office in the US for two weeks, eventually collecting $78.3 million, leading to the most successful and iconic sequel. In 1991, the director showed “Terminator: Judgment Day”, better known in our country as “Terminator 2”, which has already earned $519 million worldwide, received three nominations for the Academy Award and won two.
The second Terminator is considered one of the best movies ever made and is still popular even with people born after it was released. However, since that time, the magic of the picture could not be recreated – later films were considered failures to one degree or another. If talk of a Terminator reboot really turns out to be fruitful and Cameron returns to filming, a story with an emphasis on the II theme has a chance to “sneak” with modern audiences. On the other hand, the fate of all subsequent parts and branches of Terminator inspires skepticism.
