Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked everyone who joins the Light Up Ukraine campaign for their support.
On the longest night of 2022, more than 60 of the world’s most famous locations turned off their lights as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine. They also urged their visitors to join in collecting generators for Ukrainian hospitals.
“Such support is very important for us,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
He thanked the true friends of Ukraine, everyone who joins the Light Up Ukraine campaign.
“When the light goes out, it’s always perceived as something unusual. But when you spend four, ten, twenty hours or even days without it and start to get used to the dark, that’s the worst thing that can happen. It means that light is not the only thing they want to take away. This is an encroachment on every part of life. This is how we live in Ukraine now – defending ourselves from the enemy who came to destroy us,” the head of state wrote.
Action Light Up Ukraine – what is known
This is a symbolic international action carried out by Ukraine’s partner countries. In various cities around the world, the lighting of iconic buildings or locations was turned off for a while.
In this way, the organizers wanted to draw attention to the Russians’ destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and the lack of light in Ukrainian homes. Also, its goal was to collect funds for the purchase of 1,000 generators for Ukrainian hospitals.
In particular, the lights at the famous Niagara Falls were turned off for a minute as a sign of solidarity with the residents of Ukraine. After that, the waterfall was illuminated with blue and yellow flowers.
Earlier it became known that in Krakow, Poland, as part of the “Lights for Ukraine” campaign, the lights of a number of attractions will be turned off for a minute every day from December 21 to January 1.
