On the way to the USA, Zelenskyi’s plane was accompanied by a NATO reconnaissance plane and an F-15 fighter jet.
The unprecedented measures taken to move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi from Kyiv to Washington are a sign of how important relations are for both countries.
According to the BBC, Zelensky’s trip to Washington began with a night train journey to Poland, after which he transferred to a US Air Force plane, which was accompanied by a NATO reconnaissance aircraft and an F-15 fighter jet.
As the publication noted, this visit was discussed for months, but the final preparations were made quickly — Biden and Zelensky talked about it on December 11, and an invitation was sent to Zelensky three days later.
As the newspaper reported, Zelensky secretly traveled by train through Ukraine to Poland, where he was spotted early on Wednesday morning at the railway station in the border town of Przemyśl.
Footage from Polish television shows a group of people, including Zelenskyi, walking along the platform against the background of a blue-and-yellow Ukrainian train. A group of people then made their way to a line of waiting cars, including a black Chevrolet Suburban, the favorite model of the US government.
Shortly thereafter, flight data showed that a US Air Force Boeing C-40B, believed to be carrying Zelenskiy, took off from Rzeszów Airport.
The plane headed north-west towards Britain, but before it entered the airspace over the North Sea, a NATO reconnaissance plane scanned the area. It is known that Russian submarines patrol the sea.
And the American F-15 fighter jet, which took off from the base in England, accompanied Zelenskyi’s flight during its journey. 10 hours after takeoff, the plane landed near Washington. Upon his arrival, Zelenskyi was given Secret Service protection — as are all visiting heads of state — but Zelenskyi’s status as the leader of a country at war with Russia meant security officials were on high alert.
“We understand that the Russian Federation has spies in this country and they may try to do something,” one senior official told ABC News. “We know what’s at stake.”
Zelensky’s visit to the USA
Zelensky visited Washington to discuss cooperation between the two countries with Biden. It was about strengthening the stability and defense capability of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader also delivered a speech in the US Congress and held a number of meetings.
