More than a million Americans were left without power due to heavy snowfall on Christmas Day
In the US, at least 19 people died as a result of the storm, and more than a million people were left without electricity.
As the BBC reports, among the victims of the winter storm were people who died in road accidents, as the situation on the roads was significantly complicated due to practically zero visibility.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that icy winds coming from the North Pole will spread to the east of the country. Record-breaking cold and snowstorms could affect more than 200 million Americans who live from the Canadian to Mexican borders.
A state of emergency has been introduced in a number of states. The NWS noted that this is the first such large-scale onset of cold weather in the entire history of observations – almost all states were affected by the “explosive storm”.
Flight tracking website FlightAware reported more than 8,000 flight cancellations and more than 25,000 flight delays.
According to forecasters, this Christmas could be the coldest in the US in 30 years.
In addition, this weather apocalypse has spread to the territory of Canada. There, severe frosts led to power outages in the homes of hundreds of thousands of the country’s residents.
“Explosive storm” in the USA
On December 23, the Americans were warned about an “explosive cyclone”, with a strong cold and snow storm. According to the NWS, the arctic blast will drop temperatures to dangerous levels across much of the country and the snow portion of the storm will fall over the Christmas weekend.
