In a statement dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series, Polyphony Digital said that more than 90 million copies of the games in the series have been sold to users to date. The official anniversary of Gran Turismo was celebrated on Friday, December 23. Today marks 25 years since Gran Turismo appeared on Japanese shelves. It’s not often that PlayStation releases specific sales figures these days, so the announcement was significant.
Preliminary data on the number of copies of games sold was published by Polyphony Digital in May 2018 – according to it, 80.4 million copies of games were sold at that time. This means that over the past four and a half years, players around the world have bought about 10 million copies of Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7. According to the GTplanet website, about 5-6 million copies of GT7 have been sold in the first three quarters of the year – which is about the same as announced GT6 sales for all time.

In addition to the announcement and celebratory video, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the game’s creation, noting that he felt very lucky to have started making games, and especially racing games.
“This was the department where the PlayStation was born,” says Yamauti, “and it was here that Kutaragi-san worked feverishly to bring the PlayStation concept to life. This place was not what I had hoped for, but now, looking back, I can say that I was very lucky.”
“Gran Turismo was the first project out of almost a hundred others that I came up with when I was just starting my career in this industry,” he says. “If the plan for something other than a racing game had been approved, there’s a good chance I could be making a game other than Gran Turismo today.”
Kazunori Yamamuti recalled his youthful ambition to become a director. They seem to be coming true soon – Yamamuti is part of the production team of the film Gran Turismo, which is directed by Neill Blomkamp.
