Recent years have been difficult for Huawei. She found herself under the pressure of US sanctions, which subsequently only intensified. As a result, the company lost access to software and hardware solutions that use American technology.
In particular, Huawei could not use Google Mobile Services on its mobile devices. Also, it could not purchase mobile processors that are manufactured using American technologies. Therefore, for the release of its last two flagship smartphone lines, it had to obtain a license and order special versions of Qualcomm Snapdragon chips with only 4G support. For example, this year’s Mate 50 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC designed to work only on 4G networks.
However, Huawei does not despair and declares that it is “back in the game”. So, the company created its own operating system HarmonyOS, which is intended for use on a wide range of devices. According to GizChina, HarmonyOS works on more than 320 million phones. It is the third largest mobile OS in the world after Android and iOS with an annual growth rate of 113%. Third-party installations of HarmonyOS are also on the rise. More than 250 million devices already use this OS, including light bulbs, TVs, microwave ovens and refrigerators. These installations are increasing at a rate of 212% per year. Huawei’s own app store AppGallery is also growing rapidly and is now the third largest in the world after Google Play Store and App Store. It has about 220,000 apps (compared to about 2.5 million in the Play Store) and serves more than 580 million users every month.
In addition, Huawei recently applied for a patent covering some EUV (extreme ultraviolet) components and the EUV lithography process. At the same time, it is reported that by improving the light source, the Chinese company’s patent eliminates some of the problems inherent in the current EUV process.

The world’s only active manufacturer of EUV equipment, the Dutch company ASML, filed a similar patent in 2016. But these patents differ in the way light is used in the EUV process. In addition, Huawei is believed to be working on “bypassing” lithography by using optoelectronic wafers and other innovations.
According to DigiTimes Asia, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration has yet to issue a patent to Huawei. It is also unclear whether Huawei has the ability to build full-fledged EUV production equipment. However, if Huawei develops its own EUV manufacturing process, the company could regain access to advanced 5G chips. It would also help Chinese manufacturers produce advanced chips, which would help the country move closer to its goal of becoming self-sufficient in semiconductor production.
