The local authorities even shot a commercial about the making of the film with an emphasis on the locations used in it – the islands of Inishmore and Achill.
In Ireland, they decided to promote the islands of the west coast of the country with the help of the gloomy movie hit “Banshees of Inisherin”, which many managed to christen as one of the best films of 2022.
As The Guardian writes, the Irish Tourism Agency has made a video about the making of the film with an emphasis on the locations used in it – the islands of Inis-Mor (Inishmore) and Achill.
“We want to capitalize on the positive image of Ireland by drawing people’s attention to the beautiful scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way in some of our key markets and encouraging them to come here,” said Tourism Ireland’s Niall Gibbons.
The video, made in collaboration with the film’s production company Searchlight Pictures, has already garnered more than 6 million views on YouTube and another 200,000 views on Twitter and Instagram.
The video includes interviews with director Martin McDonough and lead actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who praise the landscape as an integral part of the film. “This allows us to keep the beauty of the west of Ireland to the fore and showcase our unique homegrown talent,” said Gibbons.
Meanwhile, Achill Island’s tourism website has already launched a ‘Banshee Inishreen Locations Trail’, which includes a map and photos of the beautiful locations, lakes and buildings that appear in the film. “Tour guides can be provided for bus groups to tell first-hand about the locations and stories related to filming,” the enterprising Irish also note.
Local tourism authorities, meanwhile, expect spin-offs from tourism to grow if the film, which has already won several prestigious awards and nominations, continues to garner accolades.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Ireland attracts tourists thanks to successful films and TV series shot on the territory of the country. So, fans of “Game of Thrones” actively visit the forests and castles of Northern Ireland, and the beach of Carraclo in the county of Wexford attracts tourists as one of the filming locations of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster “Saving Private Ryan”.
