When to be generous in Ukraine

The ceremony owes its name to the name of the holiday itself, when it is held – it is the Generous Evening on January 13.

In charity, the emphasis is always on wishing for material goods: they wish for prosperity, a rich harvest and the offspring of livestock. In return, the hosts should also show generosity: gift those who are generous with sweets and money.

Who can be generous? This time, only young boys and girls go out to sing ritual songs – children and the older generation stay at home. The main characters of the action are Malanka and Vasyl, who represent the Moon’s sister and the hero who saved her from the Snake monster.

When can you not be generous? The very next morning, new folk traditions – sowing traditions – come into force.

When to sow in 2023

Everything ends with sowing – directly on the Old New Year, January 14. In the old days, it was customary to do this at dawn, or even before sunrise. Nowadays, almost no one goes around the houses with sacks of grain so early. But, as before, it is believed that the earlier, the better.

The fact is that popular belief says: on January 14, the first person to cross the threshold of the house must be the husband-sower – then, they say, both money and prosperity will be in the house. But the woman-the first guest is supposedly brought to tears and sadness.

Therefore, sowers visit houses from the very morning and scatter grain on the doorstep with songs – as a symbol of prosperity and well-being of this dwelling. It is not possible to collect grain until the very evening.

Who can sow? Exclusively for men.

What can not be sown? Grain for sowing must be whole. Most often, rye, wheat and barley are chosen, but sometimes even buckwheat is sown. But here peas, millet and millet It is not accepted to sow: according to the omen, it will attract tears to the house.
