The series “1899” will not get a second season. This news was announced on Instagram by the co-author of the series Baran Bo Odar. The letter to fans was also signed by Odara’s co-star and another creator of the series, Jantje Frize.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that 1899 will not be renewed,” Odar wrote. “We would love to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season, as we did with The Dark.” But sometimes things don’t go as planned. It’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans. But we want to sincerely thank you for being a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”
The series tells about a group of immigrants on board a ship who encountered a series of mysterious events. It debuted on Netflix on November 17, 2022, at the start, second only to the fifth season of The Crown. In four days, “1899” gained about 79.27 million viewing hours.
The show is a follow-up to Odar and Frize’s previous series Darkness, a landmark international breakthrough for Netflix that debuted its first episodes in 2017. After three seasons, Friese and Odar signed a deal with Netflix, the first of its kind for the European market. “1899” was the first project that appeared as a result of this agreement.
