In anticipation of AMD’s statement on Radeon RX 7900 XTX video cards overheating and subsequent performance degradation (which was supposed to appear yesterday, but only came out today), Igor Vallossek from Igor’sLAB shared his research on the problem.
As previously reported by another researcher, the problem of overheating and throttling of video cards lies in the evaporation chamber, which is supposed to cool the chip. An email received from AMD by one of the buyers said that an official announcement was due yesterday.
“Probably, the reason is in the evaporation chamber. Several batches were touched. Currently, 4-6 parties and thousands of video cards are under suspicion. Only MBA cards were affected,” the letter said.
During the sale of Radeon RX 7900 XTX, hundreds of graphics cards were recalled, including those integrated into the assembly of computers. The issue only affects the RX 7900 XTX model and only the AMD/MBA reference design. It does not affect any of the video cards with a non-standard cooling system. The RX 7900 XT reference model with a cut-down Navi 31 GPU is also unscathed.
“Only the functionally limited RX 7900 XTX vapor chamber is affected by a serious issue that requires a graphics card recall. This is due to the fact that not only the hotspot, but also the storage tank can heat up to 110 °C, operating well above the permissible temperature limit” — Ihor Vallossek
AMD has traditionally prioritized the production of reference cards over partner cards in the first weeks of launching new Radeon models. That is why there are so few announcements and available options on the market at the start of sales. After selling thousands of reference cards to users and partners, the company found itself in a difficult position. AMD currently offers exchanges or refunds to individuals and retail partners.

Here’s what AMD’s official statement, which did come out today, says:
We are working on determining the reason for the unexpected performance limitation of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. Based on observations to date, we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD’s reference design and occurs in a limited number of cards sold. We are working on a fix for the affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD Support.”
