EPAM, which maintains the status of the largest IT company in Ukraine, analyzed in a new study how effectively Ukrainians learn IT, and what hinders them in this way – in the survey, which was conducted from November 29 to December 15, 2022, 1,927 people took part. And now the authors shared the results.
IT remains the only export industry of Ukraine that is fully operational in wartime and at the same time growing steadily — record salaries in dollars, as well as increased attention from the state and business with all initiatives to stimulate IT, including scholarships (1 and 2) . ), expectedly led to an increase in the number of people wishing to master the IT specialty. About 50,000 Ukrainians applied for the educational program from the Ministry of Digital IT Generation. At the same time, a 10-fold increase in the number of students was noted at EPAM University — more than 18,000 Ukrainians registered for the pilot program for IT Fundamentals sweaters there. However, not everyone who wanted to try their hand at a new specialty completed their studies – EPAM noted that one in six completed the basic IT Fundamentals course. According to Denys Hrynyov, head of educational programs of ERAM University, the vast majority of people who went to study do not fully understand what IT is. In other words, IT is hard.
“I have been working in education for many years and I see the influence of the Soviet school, when a significant number of students expect the teacher to push them to study. But in IT, everything is different, if a person is motivated, they will help him, give him materials, prompt him. If there is an expectation only to “get credit”, this is the wrong approach.”
