The transfer of tanks to Ukraine must be approved by Berlin.
Poland is considering Ukraine’s request for the transfer of German Leopard tanks.
This was reported by WSJ with reference to a high-ranking Polish diplomat.
According to Slawomir Debski, director of the Polish Institute of International Relations, the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine is only a matter of time. That will depend on how quickly Poland receives the replacement tanks it has ordered from manufacturers in South Korea and the United States.
“It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when,” Debski said, adding that Western reluctance to provide tanks had finally eased after months of diplomatic pressure.
“This is exactly what Poland has advocated for for many months,” he said.
The transfer of tanks to Ukraine must be approved by Berlin.
Delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine: details
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously stated that Berlin is not sending Leopard II tanks to Ukraine “to prevent the expansion of the scale of the war.” In Germany, they said that they do not plan to independently deal with the issue of the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. This will be done in coordination with NATO partners.
The head of the defense committee of the German Bundestag called for the faster transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. According to her, the USA and Germany reached a positive decision for Kyiv on this issue.
The Bundestag is putting pressure on Olaf Scholz, who is hesitating whether to transfer tanks to Ukraine.
