The Catholic Baptism of 2023 differs in dates from the Orthodox and has other traditions.
The Baptism of the Lord is one of the most important holidays in Christianity, when believers remember the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River at the age of thirty. In Orthodoxy, the Epiphany of 2023 is celebrated on January 6 according to the old style – this corresponds to January 19 in the modern calendar. For Catholics, both the date and traditions of the holiday differ.
Baptism of the Lord 2023 – the history of the holiday
The Gospel says that Jesus Christ at the age of 30 asked John the Baptist to baptize Jesus in the Jordan River. As you know, baptism “washes away” sins from a person and opens the way to the Kingdom of Heaven. And although Jesus was sinless, by his act he set an example to other believers that everyone is equal before God. It is believed that during the baptism, the Lord descended to earth in the form of a dove and confirmed that Jesus is his son.
When is Catholic Baptism in 2023
Orthodox churches celebrate Epiphany and Baptism on the same date – January 6 (January 19 according to the new style). In Catholicism, Epiphany and Baptism are two different holidays.
Catholics celebrate the Epiphany on January 6, and the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday following the Epiphany. Therefore, Catholic baptism is always a day off. Epiphany (January 6) in 2023 falls on a Friday, and Catholic Baptism is accordingly celebrated on January 8.
Catholic Baptism 2023 – as celebrated by Catholics
It is not customary for Catholics to bathe in a well for Baptism, and even among Orthodox, this tradition has existed for only a few years. The celebration of Baptism among Catholics is very modest and involves prayers and attendance at services. Catholics, as a rule, do not work on Baptism, since the holiday always falls on a Sunday.
