On January 8, immediately after the celebration of Christmas, believers celebrate another holiday – the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos.

On this day, the Orthodox Church turns to the Mother of God with songs of praise and prayers. In addition to the Virgin Mary, the church also honors the memory of other persons close to Jesus Christ – Joseph, the prophet David – the ancestor of Christ, and Saint Jacob – the son of Joseph from his first marriage, the brother of the Lord. The holiday was called “Council” because on this day there is a common – conciliar – veneration of the saints who are associated with Mary and Jesus.

After the birth of Jesus, an angel appeared to Mary and Joseph and told them to flee to Egypt, because King Herod intended to kill all the babies in Bethlehem and destroy the messiah. Saint James, together with his father Joseph, accompanied the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ to Egypt.

Holiday traditions

The feast of the Cathedral was popularly called “Babini Kashi”. On this day in Russia, pregnant women, women in labor and midwives were honored. They presented gifts, baked bread and pies. It was believed that this could ensure a woman’s easy delivery. Pregnant women and their husbands cannot work on this day so that the child is born healthy.

Women felt their connection with the Mother of God. They baked bread and brought it to the church, and there they left it near the altar. Porridge was cooked at home for dinner. The day was spent in fun – playing musical instruments and having fun.
