Google Docs will have the ability to see non-printable characters, the company announced on its blog. The setting will be available under View > Show Non-Printing Characters. As a result of its inclusion, the following signs will be visible:
- Paragraph/Break
- Line/Soft break
- Partition break
- Page break
- Column break
- Tabulation
- Gap
The mode will help to simplify the editing of the document, as it happens in Microsoft Word and other editors. With its help, it will be easier to find errors in the formatting of the document that violate the arrangement of elements in it. Obvious formatting in third-party editors has been available for many years and for some people is an integral part of professional work with documents. For some, such modes could be a deterrent when switching from other Google Docs editors.
Until now, you could only see hidden formatting in Docs using third-party plugins. In Google’s IssueTracker feedback on this matter, many stated that not being able to see the formatting significantly affects the perception of the service. Users call the current situation a significant problem and wonder why the feature still does not exist.

Google is constantly working to improve its document service, which is available to everyone without installation or payment (but with different levels of access that differ in functionality). Last year, Google Docs added convenient code viewing, customizable menus, and other features.
The display of hidden formatting in Google Docs is already implemented since January 9 and will be available to all users from January 23.
