In Beau Is Afraid, Joaquin Phoenix plays a successful entrepreneur who is traumatized by his relationship with an overbearing mother and after her death begins his journey home, facing “surreal threats.”
Judging by the trailer, “Beau Is Afraid” is somewhere on the border between a horror film and an indie adventure film. The first frame shows a disturbing moment of the protagonist’s childhood and the complicated relationship with his mother. Later, the video, accompanied by the rhythmic 80s song Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp, shows Bo, who has already lost his mother and is struggling with nightmares. The audience is told that it is “from the hero’s darkest fears that the greatest adventure is born.”
In addition to Phoenix, the film will feature Nathan Lane (“Murder in One Building”), Patti LuPone (“American Horror Story”), Amy Ryan (“The Office”), Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandol, Zoe Lister-Jones and Richard Kind.
