Variety calls the series a “thrilling zombie saga”, noting that the show has the potential to be “one of the best on television”. Colleagues and Digital Spy agree, calling the series “an early contender for show of the year” and adding that “the series is a game-changer in the narrative”.

Empire’s review states that The Last of Us is “arguably the best video game adaptation ever made” and that it is “a great example of how to make an adaptation work while keeping elements of what already worked”.

It was not without negative reviews – Entertainment Weekly claims that they could not decide whether it is an adaptation or a repeat and gave the series a B- rating.

One episode completely changes the canon of the game, but some scenes are replayed frame by frame. The series will be suitable for beginners or fans who prefer barely changed adaptations.

HBO’s The Last of Us VS The Last of Us Part 1: Fans compared the teaser of the new series to the popular video game

TV Guide gives the show a 7.9 rating, saying that “the story feels rushed at times” and that the series is at its best in moments “when it goes beyond its game.”

Last month, series co-creator Craig Mazin declared that The Last of Us is “the best story ever told in video games,” explaining that its characters are ordinary people, not characters:

“They didn’t shoot with their eyes. And there were just people. And this, of course, is very rare in games.”

Naughty Dog studio director and series co-creator Neil Druckmann also stated that the series will have much less violence and brutality than the game.

“We needed a certain amount of violence for the mechanics [игры] – so that you are connected to Joel’s screen avatar and see the world through his eyes. But this is not necessary in a passive environment. One of the things I really enjoyed hearing from [соавтора Крейга Мейзина] and HBO is, “Let’s remove all but the most important violence.”

The first episode of the 9-episode show The Last of Us, starring Game of Thrones stars Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsay (Ellie), will air on HBO Max on January 15, 2023.
