Google and NVIDIA have raised concerns with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In doing so, the companies joined Sony in raising questions about the deal, which the FTC is trying to block in court.
The commission argued that the deal would hinder competition in the video game industry and scheduled an internal trial for August. Any company can be subpoenaed to testify as part of an FTC lawsuit.
Google and Nvidia provided information supporting the FTC’s key claim that Microsoft could gain an unfair advantage in the cloud services, subscription and mobile gaming markets. This was reported by knowledgeable sources who wished to remain anonymous. NVIDIA has reportedly emphasized the need for equal and open access to games, but has not directly opposed the acquisition.
Although Microsoft has promised to release future Call of Duty games on competing platforms for at least 10 years, as well as bring the franchise to Nintendo consoles, regulators fear that after the purchase, the company could make it difficult for competing platforms to have unhindered access to Activision’s most popular games.
