The general director of the company reminded that there is currently a significant deficit in generation in Ukraine.
As of January 16, the electricity situation in Kyiv remains difficult. Because of this, today the lights were turned off in all the gray areas of the graph.
This was reported by the general director of YASNO energy company Serhiy Kovalenko. He explained that these restrictions are the only possibility not to make things worse.
“Today, Kyiv had 974 MW out of the required 1,600. We were on the edge of the schedule, we were shutting down in all gray areas. The situation continues to be difficult, and restrictions now are the only possibility not to make things worse,” Kovalenko said.
He reminded that Ukraine currently has a significant generation deficit. At the beginning of 2022, the generation structure looked like this:
- nuclear power plants – 55%;
- TPP and CHP – 29%;
- hydroelectric power plants – 7%;
- renewable sources (solar, wind and other power plants) – 9%.
According to Kovalenko, nuclear power plants, which are the main source and produce large amounts of electricity, are inflexible and cannot quickly respond to changes in demand. Currently, nuclear generation is not working at full capacity, as the ZNPP does not supply electricity to the grid. There is no way to compensate for this.
Thermal generation is usually used to quickly balance generation and consumption, but now TPPs are also damaged. Currently, energy companies are trying to use hydroelectric plants, but they require time to recover.
“That is, when we say that the situation is extremely non-standard, it is so. The energy system is the same throughout Ukraine. This means that if, let’s say, several units of the power plant in the west of the country are not working, then the restrictions will apply equally to Lviv Oblast, Odesa Oblast, and Cherkasy Oblast. And light-gray zones now most quickly mean disconnection,” Kovalenko concluded.
The situation in energy
As reported, on January 14, the Russian invaders launched 57 missile and 3 air strikes on the territory of Ukraine. DPEK said that the Russian invaders got into the turbine section of the power unit of one of the TPPs, due to which they stopped or reduced the production of electricity, and the deficit in the power system increased. This forced the reduction of consumption limits in proportion to all areas.
DTEK explained that the end of the heating season will not significantly improve the situation with power outages in Ukraine.
